American Teacher is the feature-length documentary produced and directed by Academy Award winning filmmaker Vanessa Roth; produced by Nínive Calegari, co-founder of the literacy non-profit 826 National, and best-selling author Dave Eggers; and narrated by Academy Award winner- Matt Damon. American Teacher chonicles the stories of four teachers - Erik Benner, Jonathan Dearman, Jamie Fidler, and Rhena Jasey who live and work in disparate urban and rural areas of the country. By following these teachers as they reach different milestones in their careers, the film tells the deeper story of the teaching profession in America today. The film shows us the experience of these four young teachers as they recognize the importance of what they do.

Effective September 30, 2011, the Ohio PIRC will cease all operations. The U.S. Department of Education, the primary funder for the past 17 years, did not recommend PIRC as a single line-item in the federal budget going forward

PLI Graduate Gail Gardner on Fox News

Last year PLI Graduate Gail Gardner began her project titled "Blossoms". The "Blossoms" program helps young girls ages 9-12 by teaching them about self-esteem, self-improvement and the importance of education. "Blossoms" focuses on giving young ladies the tools, knowledge and resources they need to thrive in today's society as well as in the future. Respect for one's self and for one another and Entrepreneurship are a few additional lessons Gail and her young ladies work on.

MILLION FATHER MARCH
On the first day of school, August 16, 2011.

All fathers of school aged children or men who play a part in the lives of a child or children are invited to make a pledge which includes taking their children to school on the first day and encourage them to do their best in school everyday. (Click on the photo above for a larger view)

Summer Speaker Series

This summer, the Community Building Institute is hosting a series of conversations to explore the benefits of the forming lasting positive partnerships in community. Collaboration makes sense on so many levels and often produces new ideas that lead to a higher quality of life for everyone. This summer we will be exploring some great examples of working community partnerships that are making positive change. It is no mistake that we start with schools, and that there are principles in all three sessions. We will then explore just how helpful local businesses can be in community, and round out the series with our own experiences with our neighborhood; Evanston.

Come and here from practitioners, neighborhood residents and partners who have taken the plunge and are working together to form lasting partnerships that are improving the places we all live, work, and play. These are meant to be informal, conversational sessions, so please come prepared to hear some great ideas and share your own.
